In-Bond Movement · CBP Types 61 / 62 / 63

Move freight through the US without paying duty you don't owe yet.

In-bond lets cargo cross the United States under CBP bond — headed inland for entry at another port, transiting through to another country, or exported straight from the port of arrival — with no formal customs entry or duty payment along the way. BorderFlow carries the bond, files every movement electronically, and closes it before it becomes your liability.

The real difference

A missed 2-day window becomes a bond claim.

In-bond is simple in concept and unforgiving in execution. Most exposure comes from tracking gaps, not the paperwork itself.

Typical approach
You have to find a carrier that's actually bonded
Open in-bonds get tracked in a spreadsheet, if at all
A diversion means calling around instead of filing electronically
A missed 2-day window turns into liquidated damages against the bond
BorderFlow in-bond
Moves under our own custodial bond — no separate carrier to find
Every open movement is visible in the same system as the shipment
Diversions are filed electronically the moment the routing changes
Arrival and export reported inside CBP's 2-day window, every time
What qualifies

The three most common ways a shipment moves in-bond.

These cover most freight movements, based on where the cargo is actually headed. Other scenarios exist too — including warehouse withdrawals for transportation and vessel supply movements — and we handle those as well.

CBP Type 61 · IT

Immediate Transportation

Merchandise moves under bond from the port of arrival to another US port, where formal entry is filed. No duty is paid until entry at the destination port.

Fits: Freight arriving at one port but entered closer to its final US destination.

CBP Type 62 · T&E

Transportation & Exportation

Merchandise transits through the United States under bond and is exported to another country — no US entry is ever filed.

Fits: Freight arriving at a US port but destined for Mexico, Canada, or overseas.

CBP Type 63 · IE

Immediate Exportation

Merchandise is exported directly from the port of arrival, without moving elsewhere in the US first.

Fits: Freight that's simply passing through a single US port on its way back out.

What's included

We don't just explain in-bond. We carry the bond.

Everything below runs as one program, tied to the same system as your customs and freight operation.

Bond Coverage

Freight moves under BorderFlow's own Category 2 custodial bond — no hunting for a bonded carrier on short notice.

Movement Classification

We determine whether a shipment should move as IT, T&E, or IE based on its actual routing — not a default guess.

Electronic Filing (ACE)

Every movement is created, tracked, and reported electronically — paper 7512 copies aren't accepted for arrival or export anymore.

Arrival & Export Reporting

Status is reported to CBP inside the required two-business-day window — the deadline that most bond claims come from missing.

Diversion Handling

If a shipment needs to change ports or destinations mid-move, the diversion is filed electronically before it becomes a compliance problem.

Bond Closure & Liability Management

Every movement gets closed cleanly — nothing left open against the bond, no surprise liquidated damages notice months later.

Why it matters

Built for the people who own the outcome.

In-bond risk and in-bond value look different depending on your seat.

01

Duty deferred or eliminated, not paid early

Cargo that's ultimately exported never triggers US duty at all — no drawback claim needed to get it back later.

02

Bond liability actually managed, not just insured

A missed reporting window doesn't just risk a fee — it risks a liquidated damages claim against the bond itself.

03

One accountable party for the whole movement

No coordinating a separate bonded carrier, broker, and tracking system for freight that's simply passing through.

04

Visibility into every open exposure

You can see what's moving in-bond right now, not discover an open movement when CBP sends a notice.

05

Faster routing decisions

Choosing to enter inland, transit for export, or export immediately becomes a routing decision, not a compliance gamble.

06

Works alongside your existing entry process

In-bond handles the movement; your formal entry — wherever it happens — proceeds the way it already does.

How a movement runs

Five steps. One team running all of them.

No separate bonded carrier to line up, no gap between the truck moving and the paperwork catching up.

1

Classify

We determine whether the movement is IT, T&E, or IE based on where the freight is actually headed.

2

Bond

The movement travels under BorderFlow's own custodial bond — no separate carrier bond to arrange.

3

File

The in-bond entry is created and filed electronically through ACE, with the correct FIRMS code and destination on file.

4

Track

Status is visible in the same system as the rest of the shipment — not a separate carrier portal.

5

Close

Arrival or export is reported inside CBP's two-business-day window and the movement is closed cleanly.

A retailer moving ocean containers from Los Angeles to Nuevo Laredo avoided a US entry entirely.

BorderFlow classified the movement as T&E, filed it electronically, and reported the export within CBP's two-day window — no duty paid, no exposure left open against the bond.

Why BorderFlow

In-bond that's bonded in-house, not brokered out.

Most freight providers need to find a bonded carrier for an in-bond move. We already are one.

Our own custodial bond, not a subcontractor's

The movement runs under BorderFlow's Category 2 bond — one accountable party, not a bonded carrier we hope shows up on time.

One system, so nothing sits open by accident

The in-bond record lives with the shipment, so a movement doesn't quietly stay open after the truck has already arrived.

Bilingual operators who see the movement close

When a T&E movement closes at the Laredo crossing, our own team is the one confirming it — not a third party.

Proactive on the 2-day window

We treat CBP's reporting deadline as a workflow trigger, not a due date someone has to remember.
